JA New York: How long have you been designing jewelry?
Sonya Coulson Rook for Metamorphosis Metals: I first adventures in jewelry design were while studying art in college. After two somewhat disastrous semesters of ceramics classes, my professor suggested that I take a metals course. I hadn’t considered the media before, but decided to give it a try. The first time I picked up a hammer I was hooked and quickly switched my focus. I started designing commercially about 10 years ago when I started Metamorphosis Metals.
JA New York: What about jewelry as an art form are you drawn to in particular?
SC: I love working with metal, it’s both sturdy and malleable, the possibilities for creating with it are endless.
JA New York: What inspires your designs?
SC: I’m inspired by nature, industrial decay, and story telling. You can often find me picking up interesting objects (tiny bits of nature, broken pottery shards, buttons, rusted hardware) or snapping photos of pealing paint, old brick walls, and crumbling plaster.
JA New York: Instagram or Facebook?
SC: I’m a visual person, so Instagram all the way!
JA New York: If you got a one-way plane ticket to anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
SC: This is a tough one, there are so many places I want to visit. I think if I had to choose one place it would be Japan. I love the wabi-sabi design aesthetic and cultural appreciation for craftsmanship.
