The Mediterranean Coast of her childhood, and her current home in California’s Manhattan Beach, are continually influences in the work of Rock and Gems designer, Sig Ward. Cool vibes and the vivid hues of the ocean are both apparent in each piece in this extensive collection. We caught up with Sig to get a little insight into her design process, and we’ve decided that hers is the desk we need to raid the next time we’re on the West Coast!
JA New York: What inspires your designs?
Sigalit Ward for Rock and Gems: My love for the ocean and nature inspires my designs. I love the monochromatic tones of the sand as well as the vivid hues of the ocean. Bright colored animals and flowers, as well as pale grays found in rocks and sand. All textures and materials bold or understated are beautiful in their own way and find their way into my designs.
JA New York: Walk us through your design process…
SW: I typically pick out my stones first and then design around them, keeping in mind weight and size in terms of heaviness for earrings and necklaces. I try to experiment with different stones and designs with every collection.
JA New York: If you weren’t a jewelry designer, what would you be?
SW: If I wasn’t a jewelry designer I would probably be a fashion designer, as I love fashion, design and creating a wearable piece out of elements.
JA New York: Instagram or Facebook?
SW: Instagram, for sure because it’s more accessible for everyone and easier.
JA New York: If you had a super power, what would it be?
SW: A super power I would like to have is the ability to ease anyone’s pain and suffering.
JA New York: What’s your biggest (non-jewelry!) weakness?
SW: My biggest non-jewelry weakness is travel. I love to meet new people and taste new cuisines.
JA New York: What’s currently on your desk?
SW: I always have fresh flowers and chocolate on my desk!
