Following Las Vegas Market Week each year, themes emerge in terms of what was trending at the various events. Of course, with exceptionally crafted fine jewelry, nothing ever truly goes “out of style”; these pieces are made to last a lifetime and beyond, to become treasured heirlooms that are passed down from generation to generation. But there are usually gemstones or colors that are featured more prominently than others, or a commonality in terms of scale, silhouettes or styling, and whatever we see in great quantities during market week ultimately gets picked up by stores, press, and style-setters. One of the most pronounced themes we saw this year, which came as a surprise to exactly nobody, was an explosion of green!
Gemmy or opaque, just a splash or making a statement, green has been everywhere for the months leading up to Vegas, and we were excited to see that it hasn’t lost any of its steam. The color’s pull on designers, manufacturers and brands manifests in a variety of styles featuring a plethora of green gemstones. The floor of the upcoming JA New York Fall show, October 27-29, will give retailers an opportunity to discover pieces showcasing the green hue in a range of price points that make it really is easy to be green.
When thinking of green gemstones, emeralds are usually the first stone that comes to most people’s minds, and for good reason. While it lives harmoniously among “the big three” (sapphire and ruby rounding out the trio), emeralds are available in diverse sizes and saturation levels, from gumball sized cabochons to smaller, faceted stones that add a pop of color to a bold gold chain, or beads that can be strung into perfect layering pieces. Tourmalines come in the full spectrum of the rainbow, and green tourmalines can be obtained in shades from pastel to rich tones, with some of the more saturated garnering higher price points, and the more subtly colored equally beautiful yet more accessibly priced.
Peridot is another stunning green gemstone that exhibits strong undertones of yellow, veering into chartreuse. The birthstone of August, peridot is beautiful when set in warm or cool metals, and in larger sizes, its vibrancy is absolutely breathtaking. While emeralds, tourmalines and peridot are all “gemmy,” malachite is an opaque stone that contains polychromatic bands and swirls of green and gold. One of the most captivating of all gemstones, it is always a conversation starter when set into imaginative designs.
