With three locations in Chicago, Steve Quick Jeweler is a destination for designer fine jewelry, engagement rings and estate jewelry in the heart of the midwest. We caught up with Melissa Quick who, along with her husband Steve Quick, is President of Steve Quick Jeweler, and we discovered that her love of jewelry–and specifically her love of gems–runs deep!
JA New York: Facebook or Instagram?
Melissa Quick: Instagram for sure!
JA New York: Favorite gemstone?
MQ: Do I have to choose just one?? Tourmaline….no make that zircon…on second thought spinel…seriously, is this a trick question??
JA New York: What’s your retail mantra?
MQ: I don’t know if it would be considered a mantra, but the recurring theme is always “Do you love it?” Whenever we buy jewelry for the store this is the standard. If Steve or I cannot answer YES, then we do not buy it. Period.
JA New York: Dream celebrity client?
MQ: Funny enough I cannot think of one. I guess that is part of my Midwest mentality. We are so far from being a celebrity-centric culture here in Chicago!
JA New York: Guilty pleasure?
MQ: Dark chocolate. I have a piece of dark chocolate every night. Runner up – French fries, which I almost never allow myself to have.
JA New York: Favorite holiday?
MQ: Halloween
JA New York: Music you play in your store?
MQ: I’m very passionate about music and insist on curating our music mix for the stores. It’s incredibly eclectic and runs the gamut from Lady Gaga to Led Zeppelin. Most recently I splurged on about 200 songs from The Vitamin String Quartet. They do string covers of pop and rock. I love it when a customer realizes that the “orchestra music” they are listening to is actually Nirvana!
JA New York: Music you play in your car/home?
MQ: I’m an alt-rock girl through and through (hence my go-to hashtag of #ChicagoRocks)! Right now I’m having a moment with the Arctic Monkeys but Foo Fighters and Green Day are never far behind. If I’m feeling nostalgic it’s the Cure, Depeche Mode or U2. Steve and I average 3-4 music festivals a year and I’m always on the lookout for a new favorite.
JA New York: If you had a Super Power it would be…?
MQ: Is there a super hero who is awesome at multi-tasking?? Not much of a super power, I know, but it would sure come in handy!!
JA New York: Your most prized possession?
MQ: Right now it is my dog Zoe. She was recently diagnosed with cancer and I feel like every day with her is a gift.
JA New York: Go-to news source?
MQ: I have a BA in Journalism and used to be a news-print sort of a girl. That being said, I have learned to enjoy the news app on my iPad. I get an aggregate of news from the New York Times (for hard hitting news), BBC (for world view), National Geographic (because I’m a self-professed nerd) and The Hollywood Reporter.
