JA New York: How long have you been designing jewelry?
Jacquelyn Rice for Gild the Lily: We have been seriously designing and making jewelry for about 5 years. Before that in 2000 I started using polymer for brooches, but didn’t pursue that very long as we also design and make garments——starting that process with digitally printed fabrics——we do all that ourselves. But now making jewelry is starting take off.
JA New York: What about jewelry as an art form are you drawn to in particular?
JR: Art Jewelry came to our attention through SNAG, an organization of contemporary jewelry makers with a large cohort of young makers. Since we are not young it was a breath of fresh-air as a lot of these makers are experimental and exploratory.
JA New York: What inspires your designs?
JR: Our designs are informed by our use of color and choices of materials. Our current collections make use of various plastics, sterling and powder coated metals. We are interested in a kind of graphic look rather than romantic. The market place for jewelry is over flowing with gems and the look that confers. So being ornery we have chosen another path using outsider materials and ideas.
JA New York: You’ve got a one-way plane ticket to anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
JR: Ah, the crux of the questions! Where do we want a one way plane ticket to—Our first choice is New York City, then Paris, then Amsterdam and of course Kyoto and maybe Ahmedabad again and again. We have traveled most of the world and always want to do more.
