JA New York–How long have you been a jewelry designer?
Emilie Shapiro: I’ve been making jewelry since I’m 13 and haven’t stopped since!
JA New York: What inspires your designs?
ES: I get inspiration from everywhere in nature – color, texture and movement. I was a trained dancer for 20 years so the fluidity and how a piece moves with the body is so important to me.
JA New York: What are you most looking forward to about exhibiting in the New Designer Gallery?
ES: When I started my line I only created a contemporary collection with sculptural brass pieces and rough gemstones. I introduced a fine collection a little over a year ago and the two lines have completely different voices. I’m really excited to be showing my fine collection by itself for the first time as it has grown so much – give it a chance to really shine on its own (pun totally intended).
JA New York: If a song played every time you walked into a room, what would it be?
ES: It’s pretty hard to pick just one song, but it’d be pretty cool for “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” by The Police to play while I walk in through a glitter explosion.
JA New York: If you were forced to get a tattoo, what would it be and where?
ES: I have three tattoos – one is on the inside of my right wrist and is an Om symbol I got when I was 18. It’s the vibration of the universe and I reminder that we are all one.
