Designer Mia Chicco‘s obsession with jewelry began when she was a schoolgirl and she could be found selling beads to classmates on the playground. Based in Sydney, Australia, Mia continues to be influenced by her formal training with jewelry masters of Florence, as well as sights, sounds, textures, aromas and experiences of her day-to-day surroundings.
JA New York: How would you describe your brand to someone who is not familiar with it? Give us your “elevator pitch!”
Mia Chicco: I have always been inspired by our ability to transform an object into an emotion. My jewelry is entirely handmade using centuries old techniques and inspired by my Italian heritage, studies with the masters in Florence and an appreciation for ancient Roman treasures. I have always found great beauty in the contrast of technical precision and the imperfect and my collections reflect this.
JA New York: Do you have a particular wearer in mind when you’re designing?
MC: I design for those who are confident in their style and who place great value on craftsmanship and provenance. My pieces are a perfect fit for those who seek jewelry that moves beyond the status quo.
JA New York: What is your biggest source of design inspiration?
MC: I believe you can find inspiration anywhere if you know where and how to look. Sights, sounds, textures, aromas and experiences have all helped shaped who I am, and the pieces I create.
JA New York: What is one thing that can always make you smile?
MC: My little sausage dog Totti – and definitely chocolate!
JA New York: If you could spend one day in somebody else’s shoes, whom would it be and why?
MC: Frida Kahlo for her strong sense of self and lust for life.
