East Fourth Street designer, Susan Crow, is driven by her deep connection to design and her core believe that we need to preserve and restore our environment, not take away from it. To that end, she is committed to creating an environmentally conscious studio. The entire line is crafted from recycled or Fairmined precious metals, reclaimed, certified or lab created diamonds. Gemstones are chosen very carefully, striving for mine to market traceability. When we caught up with Susan in advance of her JA New York debut, we also discovered that she has a special skill that we don’t want to mess with!
JA New York: How would you describe your brand to someone who is not familiar with it?
Susan Crow: East Fourth Street was born in the heartland of the US, 100% Minnesota made. We blend together heritage and fine design with each of our handcrafted collections — all of which are made from recycled or FAIRMINED precious metals, reclaimed, certified diamonds and gemstones that we choose very carefully, striving for mine to market traceability.
We are an ethical fine jewelry brand dedicated to sustainable principles in our supply chains and production, using recycled and Fairmined gold and silver with Fair trade and ethically sourced gemstones.
JA New York: Do you have a particular wearer in mind when you’re designing?
SC: Since we design for both men and women, our perfect client is the person that enjoys minimalistic, clean design in their environment, and how they portray themselves to others through their clothing and adornment. East Fourth Street’s frosting on the cake is our ethical and environmental supply chain focus. Our clients understand and appreciate that.
We offer earrings, bracelets, pendants and wedding rings, jewelry for both men and women.
JA New York: What is your biggest source of design inspiration?
SC: The minimalistic, clean lines of Danish and Bauhaus design as well as the textures and shapes of nature influence the design sense of East Fourth Street.
More recently we are inspired by the shaded warmth and compositions of Flemish painters such as Pieter Claesz.
JA New York: What’s one thing that always makes you smile?
SC: Funny humans, especially my husband. Some people have the rare talent of just being funny and I adore it when I find them.
JA New York: If you could be a TV/Movie villain, who would you be and why?
SC: I don’t have a natural affection for villains, but if I had to choose one, it would probably be “Brain” from “Pinky and The Brain.” Although, I think I can relate more to Pinky…
JA New York: Do you have a “special skill” that people don’t know about?
SC: One special skill that I’m particularly proud of is pushups. I’m up to 30. Once I get up to 50, I’m going to start arm wrestling.
JA New York: If you could spend one day in somebody else’s shoes, whom would it be and why?
SC: The Dalai Lama. He has the most interesting way of dissecting situations and obstacles and breaking them down into simple, clean opportunities for change. “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.”
