Ann R. Korman, the designer behind ARKjems, is deeply committed to her spiritual and physical practice, in which she has extensive training, and which ultimately drives her design aesthetic. As we got to know her a little better through our interview questions, we also discovered that Ann has a very special skill that will have us begging for an invitation to her next dinner party!
JA New York: How would you describe your brand to someone who is not familiar with it? Give us your “elevator pitch!”
Ann R. Korman: My experience as a yogi has made me aware of the beauty that abounds all around us. This beauty can be calming, inspiring, and/or energizing. I want people that wear my pieces to respond spontaneously to my designs. But, then become aware that there is more going on.
JA New York: Do you have a particular wearer in mind when you’re designing?
ARK: Someone who will wear it with a t-shirt and ripped jeans. Someone who knows it’s worth, but doesn’t treat it as something precious. Also, someone that feels that the pieces are amulets and isn’t afraid to tell you why.
JA New York: What is your biggest source of design inspiration?
ARK: My travels with my family around the world and especially in the East. Also, my meditation/yoga practice.
JA New York: What is one thing that can always make you smile?
ARK: Pizza and Champagne
JA New York: If you could be a TV/ Movie villain who would you be and why?
ARK: Poison Ivy. She is a temptress and an environmentalist. She uses plants to ‘seduce’ her enemies.
JA New York: If you could spend one day in somebody else’s shoes, whom would it be and why?
ARK: Cleopatra. She was a strong woman who was ahead of her time. And, who wouldn’t want to try on her jewelry and see if was truly “magical”?
JA New York: Do you have a “special skill” that people don’t know about?
ARK: I make a roasted chicken and roasted duck that would rival the best French restaurants.
