Las Vegas sparkled a bit brighter right after Memorial Day, hosting some of the jewelry industry’s most prestigious events. My visit included three significant shows, each unique in its presentation and atmosphere, showcasing the best and latest in jewelry and watch design.
The COUTURE Show: A Glamorous Affair
Held at Wynn Las Vegas, COUTURE was a breathtaking display of elegance and craftsmanship. The show floor was bustling with activity, an always amazing mix of designers, retailers, and jewelry luminaries. The ambiance was both elegant and comfortable, striking a perfect balance that made transactions seamless and quite frankly, looked like folks were having fun doing business. The impressive turnout and the palpable excitement in the air emphasized COUTURE’s reputation as a premier destination for luxury jewelry.
The Las Vegas Antique Jewelry & Watch Show: A Journey Through Time
Also at Wynn Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Antique Jewelry & Watch Show transported attendees to different eras with its stunning collection of vintage pieces. The show floor was equally busy, with a steady stream of visitors eager to explore the historical and intricate designs. The elegant setting of the Wynn Hotel added a touch of sophistication, making the experience memorable for antique jewelry aficionados.
JCK Show: Innovation Meets Security
Next, I visited the JCK show and Luxury at the Venetian Expo. An always impressive range of exhibitors and products, this year’s show also had a heightened security presence. The security staff were professional and effective, ensuring a safe environment without feeling oppressive. I had my own positive interaction with the security personnel when I mistakenly walked the wrong way and was gently corrected. The show was bustling with energy, and the feedback from retailers and exhibitors was overwhelmingly positive.
The Cost of Glitter: A Reflection
One recurring theme in conversations with industry professionals was the escalating cost of attending these events in Las Vegas. Flights filled up quickly and were pricier than in previous years. Hotel rates soared, making it a challenge to find accommodations that did not feel exorbitant. The cost of meals has also seen a significant increase, far removed from the days of all-you-can-eat buffets for $4.99 or 24-hour steak and eggs for $2.99.
During my stay, I preferred dining outside my hotel room, enjoying the chance to bump into familiar faces. However, one morning, I had to order room service due to a packed schedule. An omelet, potatoes, toast, coffee, and orange juice cost me a staggering $100, including tax, service fee, and gratuity. Las Vegas remains a vibrant city with an array of restaurants, shows, and attractions. However, its reputation as an affordable destination seems to be fading. Sometimes, reputations outlast their realities. This has been the case for a few years.
If you are looking for an affordable and equally exciting alternative, consider visiting a city on the East Coast with a strong jewelry show. It is a city with its own reputation. One that says if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. There, you might find a $6 egg sandwich, better than that $100 omelet – and they might even throw in a coffee.
The energy in Las Vegas was infectious, fueling my enthusiasm for the upcoming JA New York Fall Show, set to take place from October 27-29 at the Javits Center in Manhattan. Las Vegas continues to shine as a hub for the jewelry industry. New York could shine even brighter….for less.
