Heather McAvoy, the designer behind Magic & Madness, uses her brand as the creative outlet she needs to get some emotional release. With collection names like Celestial, Purple Rain and Tarot, this recent recipient of the coveted “Best Accessories” award at the Project show is inspired by the wide world (and space, and science, and nature…) around her and continually letting this labor of love make her a “deliriously happy” person!
JA New York: Do you have a particular wearer In mind when you are designing?
Heather McAvoy: I don’t actually. I behave (mostly) with our other lines. Magic and Madness is my creative outlet. It’s completely selfish and an emotional release for me. It’s all over the place… not traditionally designed into collections and I am not caught up in who’s going to buy it. It makes me deliriously happy.
JA New York: What is your biggest source of inspiration?
HM: Mainly my emotions. What I am mourning or trying to work through. A broken heart, the fear of this unknown world and how it will effect my daughter, my endless search for a higher purpose, the occult, science, nature, the passing of icons, artists, music and how my daughter sees the world.
JA New York: What is the first thing you do when waking up? What is the last thing you do?
HM: I do not have a consistent routine. I tried to for many years but I just don’t do well with that.
JA New York: What was your biggest fashion faux pas?
HM: Is there really such a thing? It’s only a faux pas until whomever the latest ‘It-Girl” wears it, then it’s haute couture.
JA New York: Who was your favorite teacher (in school or in life?)?
HM: My Grandmother…for so many reasons I couldn’t possibly start to name them.
JA New York: What is your guilty pleasure?
HM: I swear like a fucking trucker and I don’t give a shit! 🙂
